I hope you find the following videos both educational and enjoyable. I currently live in Portland, Maine and have devoted my adult life to understanding humane dog training methods. I enjoy helping dog owners understand "why" their dog is responding a certain way which leads to specific skills we can teach their dog. While some dogs are passive in nature and try to avoid conflict, other dogs become activated in their responses. Activated dogs struggle to sit or down when in this state, let them be activated by leading them away to reduce their frustration.
After rescuing three territorial dogs with bite histories, I joined the Association of Pet Dog Trainers in 2008 to learn how to support my own beloved pets. I am currently a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant through the IAABC. A Certified CARAT Assessor, through the Clothier Animal Response Assessment Tool, a National Speaker and soon to be an Author!

Best Way to Teach Stay
Training the stay for any dog:
Training sessions of between 5-10 minutes several times a day in a low distraction environment. (Somewhere in your home is a good place to start).
**The secret to a good stay is to not move through the stages too fast.
Build up gradually by adding distractions, duration then distance.
Tips:
Mark/click then reward the dog for laying down.
Mark/click the behavior as you stand near the dog.
Mark/click the behavior as you take one step away (slowly) and return (quicker)
Place the reward between the dog's paws
Release the dog after just 3 or 4 patterns
Repeat the pattern:
** Pay dog for laying down, Walk away slowly, mark/click, return quickly, reward, and then release for a fun game of tug!
Repeat this pattern as you add duration, distance and distractions. Remember this will be harder for the visual dog!
Plan to train for several months to help your dog generalize that they are to stay still until you release them.
Have fun and have patience with your silly puppy who wants to run and see his friends (both dog and human). They do not mature to adults until 3 years old!

Conduct training sessions of 5-10 minutes several times a day in a low-distraction environment, such as your home. How to leash a mouthy pup

Mouthing and biting are natural behaviors for puppies as they explore their environment and interact with the world around them. When a puppy mouths your hands while being petted or when you touch their collar, it's important to understand that this behavior is typically not aggressive but rather a form of communication and play. Correcting this behavior with harsh methods such as holding the p...

This simple trick will help you get your dog in the heel position easily! By using a food lure, at your dog's nose, you step back with your left leg. The final step is to lift the treat such that your dog sits, then reward! Many of us find wa...

How to Teach your dog a Hand Target! This is a great game to get your dog to come to, walk next to you or just engage with you. Thank you for the link, I'm watching the podcast now 👍😊
Excellent video Ms Judy. Just got a new GSD puppy. She is 13 weeks. She has learned to drop it, leave it, and today, thanks to you, we will start take it.
Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed the video!
Thank you for another lovely video.❤
Thanks for letting me know you liked it!
Nice to see a training video with a dog that is actually training. A lot of times the dog already knows what to do.
Glad you liked it! Thank you for the comment!
This approach demands a certain skill set level, it will first take time for the owner to acquire those skills, and the dog will also need to be conditioned on following the hand( so that it can be lured into the required position(heel as you demonstrated) not very practical advice for a novice dog and owner, your approach, it requires an investment in time, learning both the entry skills, that will take a profesional trainer and some finance.
You are right, dog training is an investment in time, much like raising a child. Fortunately, anyone can learn humane dog training techniques if they desire a strong relationship with their dog.
Hi Judy, thank you for the awesome video with this gorgeous girl. My rescue puppy is already 5 yo ;) but there is always something to teach (and learn) no matter the age of your dog. I love your videos. How do you not have more subs? Your videos are clear, simple and always interesting, I'm sure one day your channel will blow up and people will flock here! Do you have online courses or do more webinars (or lives?). I unfortunately missed the last one but would definitely be interested in more of your content.
Thank you for the positive comment! I became serious about my UA-cam channel this year, so it’s only 6 months old. I’m in the process of creating 2 courses and writing a book on how to socialize dogs based on temperament. I do public speaking engagements and have a few online classes on my website. Stay tuned for more fun content!
I wish I knew about this when Jackson was a puppy 😊
Thank you for another amazing video. You rock! I can't wait to see your other new videos this month especially on how to teach a dog to down in motion during a recall.
To get you started on “down in motion”. Begin by asking your dog to “down” on a small mat or towel as you face him. Practice this behavior 1 foot away, then two and more. Over a week or longer, see if you can walk out in front of him while he remains standing and on a 6 ft leash. Ask the down cue. Rewarding each time! What is your pups name?
@@JudyAMooreCBCLLC Beau. I am a very visual person so I am hoping you will do a tutorial on the down in motion when you have time or you even want to. Blessings!
Wow! I had given up on teaching my dog to heel, until i watched this video. One of the biggest takeaways for me is that this is a project that is done in increments and allowing the time (and fun) that is actually required.
Glad it was helpful!
This is a great yet simple game, and that's the beauty of the way Judy teaches us!! Powerful tools yet quick and easy.
Glad you like it!
This video is outstanding! So wonderful to get the live action to see the way the dogs are communicating, along with Judy's clear descriptions. So much to learn here, and love the many ways of slowing things down to achieve a friendship. Beautiful!
Thank you so much Anna!
I found the neighbours cat works wonders...
Ive seen it before
Your videos are simply amazing! Thank you soon much for sharing your knowledge. What I appreciate that you work with dogs who are not already trained. Would it be possible for you to do a video on how to teach a dog drop in motion on a recall coming towards the handler? Thank you!
Thanks for your comment! I’ll add a drop on recall video to my list for June!
@@JudyAMooreCBCLLC I will be looking forward it!!! I know that many trainers have a difficult time in teaching this as well as teaching the drop while the dog is moving away from the handler, too. And thank you for all that you do for dogs and people, too.
Mine continues to puppy bite if my hand goes limp, tries to bite my arms, ankles toes instead. If I redirect with a toy, it works shortly, then back to biting me. I sit down, arms/feet out of his reach, he barks to get attention but is ignored for a while until he settles down. 30 seconds to a minute don't work. Not my first rodeo, they eventually get better and it stops. I just hate looking like I had a battle with a razor blade.
You are correct they do get better. If it seems intense and he is a big puppy, consider he may be telling you he is hungry. Are you feeding him 3x a day with enough protein? Many large breed pups bite when hungry.
Excellent video. Some interesting point to think about as my dog is dog social but after watching the video perhaps she is more nervous in the beginning than I thought. I love how Judy points out the body indicators so we know what to look for….
Thank you! I’m really glad you found value in this video!
Ty for you videos, ive studied animal language also and fully enjoy the validation. That said, I still after over 35 years of helping owners and pets still enjoy the refresher videos alot. Ty 😊
Glad you liked it! I too am always learning about behavior as there is much to learn.
❤ thank you!
This is an outstanding video! If everyone with a puppy (of any age) would watch this several times before introducing their puppy to any other dog, we'd have a lot less reactive dogs and a lot more happy owners! Thanks to Judy these two puppies will be best of friends and playmates soon. 🙂
Too often people confuse competitiveness for dominance. They are not the same thing!
Excellent puppy training!
Thank you very much!
What if your puppy bites too hard to go limp. It can be painful.
Yes, some pups have a hard mouth. Try to help her learn biting toys = fun. When she bites you hard, pause, hold your breath a bit and go quiet. Play begins when she mouths the toy again. This dramatic shift in your energy will help her learn biting toys predicts fun! Be patient, she will get there!
This is great! Thank you!
Thanks for watching! Glad Benji is doing well!
Thank you, Judy! The training you gave Benji is really helping us all!
I'm so glad!
Does your puppy like toys? What does your puppy do when you focus on their toy? Let me know if this works for you!
Would like to see this with a guest coming to the door and entering the space. Some walking by at a 30’ away seems like a good start ….but….
You are right, this was his first day of training. He needs lots of repetition in a neutral place. Then out on walks, in his yard and finally at his door. Fortunately, he is very motivated by food!
Really nice work and absolutely spectacular shepherds how old are they
Thank you! Drake is 4 years old. Jade is 2 years old. Same father, different mother.
What I like about your teaching style is it is very straight forward and you *explain* why this is what you do. I’m rewarding this because eventually this will lead us to be able to train that behavior. You aren’t using complicated theories to explain and you keep the concepts simple.
Thank you so much!
I thought you only say the command once???
Hi Staci, I knew someone would ask about this, glad you did! The truth is all dogs are different in their motivation, patience, and agreeableness. Some dogs need more feedback to be successful. While my big male is 4 years old and did not need me to say it a few times, I wanted to set my very competitive female German Shepherd up for success. She loves toys and this distraction was hard for her. She was successful because I reminded her what I wanted from her. After I practice this game for a few weeks, I will only need to say it once for her. GREAT QUESTION!
I LOVE this. Everyone is scared of my dog because they think she is so reactive towards other dogs, yet I know she is just frustrated and doesn't understand social cues. She is over excited. She barks, lunges and whines.... but never aggressively. But she is a pitbull mix. You do make this look easy though.... I have really struggled with slow introductions like this. She just can't seem to calm down. I keep on working at it... but it is frustrating. I want to start fostering or get a second dog again, but she makes it difficult.
Email me or message me through my website. I just did a webinar on this topic. I will email you the recording, as it might help!
Such an easy but great game! 😊
Thanks for the visit
😂🤣😅😆
Hi Judy, It sounds interesting and I would love to join the webinar. Could you also share the time when it will be held (and what time zone)? As I am in Switzerland and the 6th March is a Wednesday, I need first to work out if I can participate time-wise. It would also be good to put this information on your webinar registration page. Thank you.
It starts at 2pm Eastern Standard Time. I think that will be 8pm for you.
My dog struggles greeting other pups, can't wait for the webinar!
Looking forward to learning how I can better help my reactive pup!
Great example with a competitive dog. ❤ What treats are you using?
Hey There! I am using dried liver as it is a single ingredient and my dogs love it! Thanks for watching!
I have to use a 2 balls to achieve this, my dog is happier to drop her ball if she can see I have one ready to throw
Thank you for sharing these great ideas 😊
Glad you like them!
Thank you Judy Moore . Nice & simple ❤
Thanks for watching!
It's great, but my dog doesn't have the slightes intrest in playing with me 😅
Thanks Judy. I have a client whose young dog is frustrated rather than reactive. I needed to see this.
Excellent training video. Love this. Thank you 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wonderful approach
Thank you!
Great video. Always helpful tips from Judy Moore❤
Really helpful tips, but why is the video quality so low? Kinda hard to watch :c
Thank you for this video, useful to observe your technique "live" with commentary about key points ❤️
I am happy it was helpful!
My Labrador retriever loves to fetch, but will not drop the toy. I've never seen this issue addressed. I tried using treats, which worked, but I didn't realize it could take so long to get her to give up the toy. Thanks for this video!
I use a second toy so my dog gets excited at the one i'm holding and she drops the one she has
You are welcome!
Great video thank you Judy. Do you have more videos working with GSDs?
Glad you like the video, I have two GSDs. You will be seeing a lot of GSD videos here! You might like this one as she is a bit more competitive. ua-cam.com/video/_7i8epVBI8I/v-deo.htmlsi=ZcpnOiRZBK_KBXfy
